How much is an Avios point worth?

It depends entirely on how you spend it. As a rule of thumb, around 1p per Avios is a sensible benchmark: below that and you're getting poor value, above it and you're doing well. The best redemptions can reach 1.5–2p or more, while the worst drop to around 0.5p — which is exactly what this calculator helps you work out for any given booking.

What's the best-value way to spend Avios?

Long-haul Business or First Class reward flights typically offer the most value, often well above 1p per Avios, because the equivalent cash fares are so expensive. Short-haul economy reward flights sit in the middle — decent, if not spectacular. The lowest-value options are converting to Nectar points, buying gift cards, or using "Pay with Avios", which usually return around 0.5p or less.

Is "Pay with Avios" a good deal?

Usually not. Using Avios to knock cash off a flight through the "Pay with Avios" option typically values each point at around 0.4–0.6p — among the worst uses available. Counterintuitively, the rate often gets worse the more Avios you put in, so the option that appears to "save the most" can be the poorest value. A full reward flight booking almost always beats it.

Why do I still have to pay cash on an Avios reward flight?

Reward flights aren't entirely free — you pay your Avios plus a cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges. These vary by route, cabin and airline. It's why this calculator asks for those taxes separately: you'd pay them whether you booked with cash or Avios, so only the cash you genuinely avoid counts towards what your points are really worth.

Are Avios worth more in Business Class?

Generally yes. Premium-cabin cash fares are disproportionately expensive compared with the Avios required, so the same points buy far more value up front. The trade-off is availability: airlines release only a limited number of premium reward seats per flight, which makes them harder to secure — especially for families or groups needing several seats together.

Buying Avios can make sense, but only if you'll redeem them for more than they cost you. Bought points typically work out at roughly 0.9p each, so they're only worthwhile for a redemption valued above that. Buying speculatively and holding points for years is riskier, as a programme devaluation can erode their value — it's best to buy only when you know what you're saving them for.

What is a good redemption value for Avios?

Anything above 1p per Avios is generally considered a good redemption, and above 1.5p is excellent. Between roughly 0.7p and 1p is acceptable, particularly for cheaper short-haul trips where convenience matters more than squeezing out maximum value. Below 0.7p, you're usually better off keeping your points for a stronger redemption.

Avios don't expire on a fixed date, but they can lapse if your account is inactive. Earning or spending at least one Avios within the relevant time window keeps your balance active. Because rules can change, it's worth checking your specific programme's current terms and keeping some activity on the account.
